MGT 409 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Swot Analysis, Asset, Southwest Airlines
Document Summary
Strengths may not lead to competitive advantage. Focus on the external environment is too narrow. Distinction between strengths and opportunities, or between weaknesses and threats is ambiguous. Swot oversimplifies the strategic picture and fails to consider all of the dimensions of strategy. Bottom line: swot is just one tool for examining the strategic situation. It"s a good start, but you can"t expect it to tell the whole story . The value chain analysis breaks the internal view of the company down into two types of function and nine different functions. You could easily break things into more categories, if you wanted to, and not all companies have all of the ones listed in this diagram, either. You could break general administration down into dozens of subcategories or tasks, for example, and companies that provide services (not products) don"t really have logistics issues the way they"re being portrayed here.
