People differ in talent, physical attractiveness, mental ability. Social differentiation refers to the relative access individuals and groups have to basic material and skill. These differences between people can affect access to resources. resources, wealth, power and prestige. In some societies, differences between people strongly affect access to important resources. Individuals are never treated or regarded completely equally. Social differentiation of some kind always exists. Types of social differentiation (note: these are ideal types that rarely exist in the real world. ) No individual or group has more formal or systematic access to resources, power, or prestige than anyone else. No one is barred from access to resources. There is not fixed number of social position over which people much compete. There is not a fixed number of social positions over which people must compete.
