Birth of athena: zeus swallows metis, goddess of wisdom, athena is born, fully formed and armed, from zeus"s head, zeus"s favorite child. Not because owl is a wise bird, but because athens is notorious for: virginity owls. A virgin goddess, like artemis: battle prowess. Mobility of war: patron of civilized crafts and skills. Weaving, construction of ships and chariots, etc. Primarily worshipped in cities and guardian deity: contrasting with artemis. Gifts in this regards: titles by which she"s known. Appearance: typically armed and wearing the aegis. Inspires fear in battle: has snakes around the edges, head of a gorgon. Typically medusa on aegis: sometimes accompanied by nike, winged goddess of victory. Nike of samothraca most famous depiction. Athena and athens: athens"s contest with poseidon. Argument between athena and poseidon: who will found the first city in. Zeus: judge of their gifts to future inhabitants of the city. Athena is victorious, names the city athens after herself: athena"s olive tree.
