Police have a variety of duties to perform, the most important of which is peacekeeping because it is a unique job. Officers are trained in a wide range of actions. Officer"s ability to use force appropriately and to the extent necessary is critical to their ability to perform their duties. Iacp defines force as the amount of effort required by a police officer to compel compliance from an unwilling subject. Police have the power to use force which is not present in any other social institution. No greater force than that needed to achieve the desired end. Force greater than is reasonably necessary to accomplish a legitimate law enforcement purpose. Has less potential for causing death or serious injury. Can be reasonably expected or intended to cause death or serious physical injury. Citizens loan the police anility to use force on their behalf, and they expect them to use force fairly, appropriately, and ethically.
