Chronic disorders of the nervous system: seizures, parkinson"s disease (pd, multiple sclerosis (ms, myasthenia gravis, alzheimer disease, cranial nerve disorders (trigeminal nerve cn -v and facial nerve cn -vii) A seizure is an episode of excessive and abnormal electrical activity in all or part of the brain that is manifested by disturbances in skeletal motor activity, sensation, behavior, consciousness or autonomic dysfunction of viscera. Seizures may result from an acute febrile state, head injury, infection, metabolic or endocrine disorders or exposure to toxins. Partial seizures begin in one area of cortex. Generalized involve both hemispheres and deeper brain structures. If seizure activity it chronic, the diagnosis of epilepsy is given. The exact initiating factor for seizures in unknown. Metabolic needs, oxygen requirements, and cerebral blood flow increase dramatically.
