Document Summary
Two routes of complement activation: classical pathway compliment binds to the antibody that is attached to the foreign substance, alternative pathway complement binds to the polysaccharides of the pathogen"s cell wall. Third line of defense: an immune system populated of widely disturbed cells able which recognize and respond to foreign substances: specific, obtain memory. If re-exposed to the same pathogen, able to react more quickly. Cell mediated immunity: t lymphocytes, effective against antigen within cells, requires the assistance of an antigen presenting cell (apc) Usually in the lymph nodes: cytotoxic t lymphocyte (tc) directly attack and destroy foreign cells or host cells that have become diseased. Mhc class i molecules are present on all nucleated cells of the body. Mhc class ii molecules are only present on apc. Cd8 interacts specifically with mhc class i molecules. Cd4 interacts specifically with mhc class ii molecules.
