Washington spread out troops around new york, seen as a mistake by military historians. Howe has 32,000 troops, some are german mercenaries. Howe had instructions to make peace after defeating the rebellion. Sept 11: peace conference in ny, was unsuccessful. British control ny harbor for the rest of the year. Leads to surprise attack at trenton new jersey, us wins trenton.
