Benefits derived from being part of a social network. Bridging: connection that we have that get us across lines of class, gender, religion, etc, ex. Study organizations: includes different majors, people of socio-economic status, colleges, etc: recently: decrease in bridging result of digital world and social networks. Bonding: networks that are similar to us, ex. Family emotional, financial support, etc: lower socio-economic status people tend to have more bonding social capital. Which means it"s harder to move up, as you need bridging social capital for this. Increase in population size and density has an increased demand for resources: all comes back to the industrial revolution. Demand for resources has stimulated people to find more efficient methods for producing goods and services, resulting in the division of labor. The ties that bind people to one another in a society social cement. Mechanical solidarity: the social order and cohesion based on a common conscience or uniform thinking and behavior: shared consciousness.
