ARCH 1320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Christian Cross Variants, Robert Smythson, Entablature
Document Summary
Country houses and city squares: english renaissance and baroque. Royal creates a different patronage structure and degree of wealth. Ideas brought mostly though translated guides and books (they received a dutch version of the italian renaissance) Smythson knew about renaissance palladio but chose to make this design regionally influenced. Four towers with a hall in the center (comes from medieval fortress design) Great hall is both gothic and renaissance. R- columns (engaged) with corinthian capitals, entablature. Hardwick hall, 1590-97 running around the room. Feels more balanced, plain, and less defensive and castle-like. Large windows, colonnade, symmetry, parapet around top. Loggia (very renaissance) with doric columns, wide spacing, bands on the columns (slightly modify renaissance ideas) Less fortified and more opened up then wollaton hall. Travels to venice to study palladio"s work for several years. Brings a version of palladian renaissance ideas back to england. Sets the tone of english architecture through modern day. House for queen anne and king james.
