The only compensation they get for their work is the leftovers from meals other inhabitants in the village had already eaten. Many of them have contracts with people of higher casts, working for the rest of their lives. This affects them because they"ve been paid in advance. If prices rise, they ask for higher wages, but they don"t get them. The owner says they won"t get higher wages until they pay their debt. They cannot afford food for their every day survival: the mother speaks about the fact that her children can"t attend school, eat properly every day. She doesn"t know why she is in this situation. When she was a child, she wasn"t happy, but now she sees that her children aren"t any better off. You made a bad decision in an earlier life, and you have to put up with it. If you behave well in the current life, then you can be reincarnated into a better one.
