Needless to say, the puritans main reason for encouraging literacy was to promote their religion, nonetheless, it was an effective method. Family heads were required by the government at one point to teach their children reading and writing, and stemming from that, many other forms of schooling emerged: dame schools, academies, petty schools, grammar schools, etc. The education of a saint: cotton mather, taught himself to write with help from mother, became very good, attended harvard at age 11, graduated at 15. Became minister: excellent at summarizing/paraphrasing, books = personally addressing spiritual and emotional needs of himself and others, educated his children using the books he wrote, domestic education, cotton"s servants and slaves were given literacy instruction.
