Informal writing = active and constructive learning process. Rats in boxes: increasing the flow of thought by ignoring constraints. Ignore constraints imposed by genre = explore new ideas: selective relaxation of constraints, rat analogy; many different uses for the box, instead of observing the rat, what if you observed the person observing the rat. Writing as legitimate peripheral participation in an academic discourse community: end of first year, nate had gained increasing control over the language in his texts. In informal speech, speakers focus on their thoughts and feelings: nate found it necessary to adopt a writer as an observer, each utterance of speech = act of identity. Fan fic-ing english studies: a case study exploring the interplay of vernacular literacies and disciplinary engagement. Finding: made fan fictions stories based on what she had seen/read in the media, home computer = pivotal moment= find there way into public sphere, daria = a show she wrote about that got her recognition.
