Bhajan - devotional songs: islam = azan - call to prayer/qur"anic chanting, not considered music, vehicles for religion, religious folk music. Polyphony - 2 or more melodic lines and/or melody with rhythm. Homophony - melody and accompaniment (must include harmony) Polyrhythm - many rhythms at once, layered over one another. 3 musical layers: raga - melody = important for improv, tala - rhythmic cycles, drone/sruti, plays 1st and 5th notes of raga = grounding/anchoring it for the soloist to always know where home is. Raga = the soul of indian music: psycho-acoustic effect - how certain music puts you into a mood/frame of mind, creating moods, mystical expressive form - devotional frame of mind. Perfect 5th - emphasis on a deep, resonant tonic. Iv - i cadence = amen western. Communal music making i. e. call and response. Specific musical instruments i. e. shofar - repentence. Low resonant drone sounds / feel it / constant / bodily experience / overtones / calming.
