PSYC 3404 Lecture Notes - Neonatal Jaundice, Meconium, Visual Acuity
Document Summary
The newborn digestive system initially produces feces (meconium) In certain cases, the fetus produces the meconium before the birth. Because the liver is a critical component of the digestive system, it doesn"t always work full- function after delivery. Visual acuity is not fully developed, attend to brightest visual field. Auditory system is not completely developed; amniotic fluid must be drained out. Early learning capabilities of infant: classical conditioning, operant conditioning, habituation. Born with 100- 200 billion neurons. Experience creates connections between neurons. Myelin: fatty substance that insulates the transmission of nerve impulses in your brain; made up primarily of lipids (nutritionally constituted) Synaptic pruning: process by which unused neurons are eliminated in the brain; allows for more elaborate communication networks. Shaken baby syndrome: rotation of brain that can lead to bruising; cannot unintentionally cause it. Life cycle of infancy: average infant sleeps 16- 17 hours a day. Different than adult sleep: 2 hours spurts, cyclic pattern.
