If classically conditioned to associate sound with food, sound will activate hunger instincts. Activating motivations already had, conditioning may make hungry but wont cause new motivation. No new behavior or new motivation need operant for that. Learned motivators thing people do for own sake but aren"t related to homeostatic need (ex. Drug addict acquired motivation to do heroin. Motivated to go to class, find experience of learning enjoyable, developed from positive experience, not innate. Pigeons playing ping pong acquired new behaviors, Only through operant and instrumental conditioning can we acquire. Behaviorist theory proved very effective at describing and predicting behavior early in the class. Developed solid methods for measuring and classifying behavior and avoided mentalism. We got deeper into theoretical accounts of behavior we started to see problems. We have a natural tendency to read intentions of others bc of that have tendency to see minds and intentions everywhere.
