Shaping using differential reinforcement: reinforce desired behavior, reinforcement withheld for other responses. Response class of behaviors that resemble desired behavior in some way. Each successive approx closer to end behavior (terminal behavior) than previous. How to shape: define the target behavior. Identify the starting behavior: determine shaping steps, each step must be mastered before moving to the next step, choose the reinforcer, differentially reinforce each successive approximation, move through at a proper pace. Capturing : if in subjects repertoire can capture and reinforce it. Prompting : if not in repertoire, prompt or help towards approximation. To improve effectiveness: eliminate interfering stimuli (or sources of distraction, proceed in gradual steps, limit the # of trials of each approximation (so this approximation is not firmly, continue reinforcement when terminal behavior achieved established)
