Certain european immigrants were at one point considered to be nonwhite. Irish ppl, southern and eastern europeans, jews: poorer jews were slurred as black a lot; considered distinct race in 19th century, laborers called themselves white men to distinguish themselves from southern. In most cases, immigrants chose to be white, something other minorities were never able to do.
