Dmitri is passionately in love with grushenka; he is spying on fyodor"s house to see if grushenka will show up there. Fyodor is trying to coax grushenka to his house with 3000 roubles. Dmitri (instead of taking advantage of her) turns his head away and says "the money is in the drawer. Take it before i change my mind" this is all the money he has katerina takes it and goes. Katerina becomes wealthy and gets engaged to dmitri. Dmitri says to alyosha: she doesn"t love me she loves her own virtue (she gets engaged to him because he has proved himself morally superior to her) So she wants to feel morally superior to him now. Katerina does not love dmitri in the usual sense. The more you are treated badly by the one you love, the more you like it (you feel superior) Put in her place by someone she looked down on.
