CAMS-UA 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Killing Us Softly, American Psychiatric Association, Judith Guest
Document Summary
While abnormal psychology courses are commonplace among undergraduate curricula, courses focusing on developmental psychopathology are relatively rare. This course will focus on the etiology, epidemiology, phenomenology, nosology, and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. We will engage students in a critical review of common child and adolescent psychopathology and challenge social and cultural assumptions of what constitutes normal vs. pathological behavior, cognition, and emotion. The course will meet twice weekly, using a combined approach of lecture and discussion. Each student will complete one practicum by participating in the psychiatric evaluation of a child or adolescent patient at the nyu child study center. Students will also complete one response paper, addressing a controversial topic in the field of mental health, in addition to reading two novels featuring characters who are struggling with mental illness. Lecture: tuesday & thursday, 11:00 am 12:15 pm. Location: global center for academic and spiritual life (gcasl), 238 thompson street, c95.
