Egyptian art and literature: worlds of the living and the dead. Nile = defining feature of egyptian civilization: provides farmland, travel, fertile area within desert, flows south to north (unusual) Upper and lower egypt: upper southern, grassland for hunting, lower northern, the delta area, farming possible. Before 3100 bce egypt divided into these two kingdoms. King narmer credited with unification: too place over multiple centuries. Ruler ship divided into 31 dynasties: 3100 1078 bce. On each side king wears white crown of higher egypt and red crown of lower. One of few palettes found in excavation. Uses registers 4 on one side, 3 on the other. Written name of narmer between bull heads. So important it was not allowed to leave egypt. 3300-3100 bce: predates palette of narmer, top part, scene flanked by two dogs, serpopards not connected, symmetry, bull/deer.
