Purpose of a flood story: explain why utnapishtim is immortal, gives. Gilgamesh a reality shock, one shot deal: one flood, one survivor. Relates to events and tries to explain something. Provides a reason to why an event happened. Utnapishtim there to humble gilgamesh: still 1/3 human. 1st 5 books of the bible: torah. At first believed first five books were written by moses. But some events happened after moses died. Scholars feel that there might have been 4 different sources. Chapter 1, verse 27: men and women are created at the same time. Chapter 2, verse 7: men and women are created at different times: men, plants, animals then women. Chapter 6, verse 19: monotheism culture: god sends flood because he thinks it was a mistake to have created human race. God established a covenant with noah: him, his wife, their sons and their wives inside the huge boat. In gilgamesh: no promise, no continuing communication with gods.
