HIST-UA 105 Lecture Notes - Agathon, Eryximachus
Document Summary
Throughout the whole novel by plato, the various speakers share their views about love and what is the purpose of love. The various interpretations the speakers have on love are very intriguing because all of them seemed to have a different view of why love was important to society and what is it for. One interesting point was made before the discussion on love that was important was the discussion on wisdom. Agathon says to socrates come, here socrates, and share my couch. It"ll do me good to get close to you-i"ll come into contact with whatever piece of wisdom occurred to you out there in the porch (plato, 7). Agathon made it seem as if knowledge was like water that is easily permeable and can be transferred just like that, by simply being next to one who is wiser.
