President"s term and salary- usually adhered to 2 terms, but fdr broke trend. The 22nd amendment- pres can serve max of 2 terms b/c of fear of too much power. Vp can take over and serve up to 10 years. Salary and benefits (compensation)- not specified in constitution. Gov"t pays for expenses of operating white house. Constitutional requirements- natural-born us citizen, 35 years old, us resident for 14 years. Government experience- important for presidency, but not required. Allows people to get political alliances and name recognition. Importance of money- running for presidency demands lots of money, including personal money. Campaign reform exists- if candidates exceed allotted campaign funds, lose federal matching funds. Political beliefs- parties usually choose mostly moderate candidates. Exceptions were nominated, but defeated in the regular election. Personal characteristics- most northern european middle-class, white married protestant financially successful men. Presidential succession- after jfk died, nation got new set of rules to determine who filled vacancy.
