Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of death. 1 billion people will die of tobacco related deaths this century. Rapid rise in use of alternative tobacco products. Primary care providers in the us see 2 children each day who will die prematurely in adulthood of tobacco-related diseases. Influences to start smoking nicotine addiction (adolescence) Publically requested that celebrity smokers quit smoking. 19% decrease in middle school student smoking rates, and 8% decrease in high school student smoking rates. 15% increase in teen agreement with key attitudinal statements. What works within health care about smoking. Cost-effectiveness of counseling smokers (smoking cessation is gold-standard) Every patient interesting in quitting should receive: Ask - systematically identify all tobacco users at every visit. Advise - strongly urge all smokers to quit. Ask making it a vital sign in us, done by nurse or health tech.
