The vent delivers pre-set volume at a set rate (ex. 10/min at 500 tv) when patient does not inhale spontaneously. If the patient takes his own breath on top of the set rate, these breaths are also delivered at the preset volume set on the machine (i. e. 500 cc tv). The vent delivers intermittent pre-set volume at set intervals (4 to 10/min usually). Imv of 4 means four times a minute the vent will give a preset volume (i. e. 500 cc). The rest of the breaths will be by the patient at his own volume, depending on how deeply he/she breaths. The vent assists these breaths by delivering them under + pressure. Pressure support (ps) (positive pressure applied during inspiration to increase gas flow rate and decrease wob and increase endurance). Used when patient is under gen. anesthesia, patients on paralytic agents and sedation, injuries to the respiratory center.
