Parents, peers, and culture: influence our beliefs and values, language, and appearance. Behavioral geneticists: study our differences and weight the relative effects of heredity and environment, separate genetic effects from environmental effects, stems from maturationists and environmentalist debate. Maturationists: emphasize roll of genetically preprogrammed growth and development of body and nervous system. Environmentalists: emphasize roll of learning on development. 2) tabula rasa = blank slate : theorists include: b. f. skinner/ john watson. Environments trigger gene activity: genes can be activated by responding to the environmental influence, genetically influenced. Teratogens: certain chemicals or agents can cause harm if consumed by the mother: may induce genetic changes and negatively impact neural development. 2) fetal alcohol syndrome (fas)- malformed skull and mental retardation, learning disabilities and behavior problems.
