Document Summary

Traits are passed from one generation to the next. Have many different traits that can be studied. 3 important ideas: dominant and recessive traits. Recessi(cid:448)e (cid:373)asked (cid:374)ot al(cid:449)ays see(cid:374: genes and alleles. Every individual has 2 genes for a character: segregation of alleles. You only inherit one trait from each parent. Each sperm or egg carries only 1 allele. Characteristics that are result of gene expression. Cross unknown individual to a homozygous recessive individual (tt) F2 hybrids consistent only with independent assortment. Can be explained by the pairing and segregation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis. Locus- physical location of a gene on a chromosome. Each chromosome carries allele of same gene at same locus. Random alignment of chromosome pairs during meiosis i to the independent assortment of alleles found on different chromosomes. Cystic fibrosis (build up of mucus in the lungs) X-y system males are xy and females xx. X-o system- females are xx and males x or xo.
