Animals are important to us and our society in different ways. Our perception of animals and how they are valued is influenced by the own needs and desires. Predation /parasite~ relationship where one benefits one does not, or both suffer. Cause harm to or interfere with something else we value. Can have nasty consequences for winners as well as losers. How do we best manage pests and competitors. Over 80 species ~mostly insects and spiders. All species now compete with us on some level. Attitudes towards conservation change if we needed to kill animals or clear forest to survive. Can cull with poisons, traps and guns. Neither solution is very effective or very popular. Concept of pest os anthropocentric and dependent on context. Managing pests & competitors we don"t like. Control pests in safer more effective longer lasting was. Step 1~ identify the pest and research how it operates. Find out when pest is not vulnerable.
