BIOLOGY 1101 Lecture 25: bio lecture notes
Document Summary
A measure of the community diversity, amount and ratio of different species, in a given area. It is a general measurement of ecosystem health. The inherent value of biodiversity, independent of its value to humans. Greater access to solar energy, the fuel for all life, provides increased species richness. The more time that passes without a climatic event, such as an ice age, the greater the diversity in an area. A habitat with an intermediate amount of disturbance tends to have the greatest species richness: background extinctions. Tend to be consequences of one or more features of the species" biology: mass extinction. Which can destroy many or all of the species in an area, may reflect bad luck more than species" biology: factors that influence the risk of background extinction. Species restricted in their range are more vulnerable than those with extensive ranges. Environmental tolerance: anthropocene (period of humans)
