Robert merton string theory: said we could have different types of prejudice and discrimination, we can have people that are: Unprejudiced discriminator don"t have prejudiced beliefs, have to discriminate because another person tells you to. Prejudiced discriminator people have prejudiced beliefs and they act on them. People that do not discriminate and are not prejudiced. People that chose not to discriminate, but are prejudiced. Yielding to pressure from peers or more powerful people: difficult to prove. Have to show that the higher administration knew about it and didn"t try to stop it. Two types of discrimination: individual when a person discriminates against another person. Ex) i don"t like redheads : institutional when discrimination is built into social structure, learned through socialization. If you learn something through socialization its not challenged. A belief, learned through socialization: overt , covert hidden. Ex) ray rice, sports, nascar vs. basketball vs. hockey and fighting.
