The machines will convince us they are conscious. It is beneath the dignity of excellent men to waste their time in calculation when any peasant could do the work just as accurately with the aid of a machine. Ray kurzweil: the age of spiritual machines (1999) Ray kurzweil argues artificial intelligence will make machines as intelligent as humans, and then spiritual (capable of suffering and joy, seeking meaning) Big data industry: data is generating without interacting with the system. Phones create data even when not being used. Big data is beginning to change the way we think about information, and about knowledge. Rather than developing methodologies that allow us to gather data regarding a specific guiding question (as in research), the data is already there.
