Given the fleeting, immaterial, airborne nature of sound, the idea of capturing sound may have seemed as impossible as catching the wind to people. And while the idea of recording visual phenomena goes back to the origin of humankind, recording sound is an extraordinary idea that follows the invention of the telephone in the 19th century.
