Dress has the ability to promote social stability within religious organizations and resist the rapid style changes associated with the contemporary fashion process of a secular (non- religious) society. To understand religious dress, the cultural context of a religious group must be considered. Each religion discussed in this lecture has dominant ideologies that guide their decisions about dress. An ideology is a set beliefs or ideas held by an individual or group. Dress in christianity: adam & eve in the garden of eden; modesty is the goal in dress. Dress in islam: promotes separation of the sexes; male-oriented. Dress in judaism: individuals exist to glorify god; to be well dressed is a religious duty before a personal preference. Religion is a set of beliefs, symbols, and practices that is based on the idea of the sacred and unites believers in a socio-religious community (marshall, 1944).
