Document Summary

Simpler cultures (technology speaking) do not have simple languages. All languages are equally able to provide speakers with a means of communication. A system of arbitrary vocal/signed symbols that allow for communication -> part of communication: shared in groups. Languages (includes spoken and signed langauges) are made up of discrete sets/signs. Put together in finite combinations: recognizable patterns, arbitrary and symbolic. No necessary natural connection between sound/sign and what it stands for: duality of patterning. But when a sound is combined with an image in your brain, meaning is produced. Language is not tied to time or place: not only about present or right here. Rapid fading (for example: oral messagse fades very rapidly- you hear it and then it"s gone) Interchangeability (we can send out and get messages) Feed back (people are aware of the messages they send out and they get responses back) Reflexivity talk about talk (we can talk about our languages)
