Document Summary

By middle of 17th century, one of the richest european nations. Expanded to africa for trade, moving toward asia. Before - church & aristocracy commissioning the art. Usually the catholic church & the aristocratic alliance. Only by the dutch did we see patronage on the part of locals. Mostly not aristocrats or the church (bc of calvinism stripping catholic church of power) Rembrandt, self portrait, ca 1633 (panel) uffizi, florence. Painted these portraits ages 20, 30, 40, 50 yrs old. You can see the changes in his physique. You can see his changes in approaches to painting. No majestic backgrounds (unlike bruegel or school of athens) Where light hits the figure = his hallmark. Paint becomes the real tool in delineating his figures. Paint is his main material to do everything. Raphael has light hit body more evenly. End of his life (in his 50s) Mixed paint and hues to create effect.
