High and late middle ages knights, clergy, and peasants revealed warriors. Knights were a special class of fighting aristocracy. Not all warriors are knights, but all knights are warriors. Higher: big land holders, directly beneath the king, given property by king, vies with king for control (biggest supporters, but biggest enemies) (aragorn, king of gondor vs. theodon, king of rohan) Lower: younger sons of landowners, or men born into noble families, show great physical prowess. 9th century onwards: warriors are strong part of medieval warfare due to the invention of the stirrup, mounted knights become the terror of battle. Oath of fealty: loyalty to king (lesser knight: fealty to landlords) King, lord (vassal to the king), vassal (to the lord) service as a mounted knight. Escort lord"s daughters or for the king himself. Giving one"s fortress over to the lord"s use. Third crusade: richard gets captured by the holy roman emperor, English noble"s gave money to bail him out.
