Philosophy and humanness is not the same as the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you . I shouldn"t reduce a person to a commodity, hunk of meat, object, or tool to achieve my happiness: kant"s four cases (36-37): (1) suicide (2) false promise (3) talents (4) philanthropy. Mill (1806-1873: english philosopher, made contributions in political philosophy (on liberty), normative ethics (utilitarianism), philosophy of science and logic (a system of logic) Involved in the political causes of his day (e. g. feminism, women"s suffrage, slavery) His father was a philosopher and follower of jeremy bentham (another utilitarian). Mill thinks the answers are related: actions are morally right in proportion to how much they maximize the highest good. Actions are morally right in proportion to how much they maximize the overall happiness of everyone. [t]he sole evidence it is possible to produce that anything is desirable is that people actually do desire it .
