Document Summary

One of the first thinkers to craft a sophisticated and synthetic account of the relationship between knowledge and belief was thomas aquinas (c. 1225 - 1274) In his famous work, on truth" (de veritate (q. 1)) thomas further enriches the discussion by introducing two other notions: doubt and opinion in order to help clarify what is involved in knowledge and belief. So thomas discusses: doubt, opinion, knowledge, and belief. Two things to ask about these four topics. Doubt is something that i don"t know whether it is true or not. It is possible that it is true, but equally possible that it"s false. Methodic doubt can be a valuable philosophical tool. The problem is that it embodies an attitude where one wavers between yes and no. This may be because of two things: 1) lack of evidence or 2) because there is an equal amount of compelling evidence on each side.
