Differentiation: the focus of groups on their purpose. Different social organizations have their own goals but work together. But there are multiple paths to societal change, change does not always happen in one directions. There is no conceptual way to see taking away rights is change, change. Evolutionary theories moving backwards does not qualify as change. Positive, forward progress only counts as change. Gramsci: people consent to their own domination accepting ruling class hegemonies. Dahrendorf: distribution of authority determines probability of conflict. Change reflects cycle of growth and decline.
