SSE121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Psychoactive Drug, Opioid Use Disorder, Etiology
Document Summary
The latest literature on the etiology of substance abuse disorders in both teenagers and adults encompasses a variety of hypotheses from somewhat simplistic unitary conceptualizations to more detailed, comprehensive explanatory models. Factors which were once considered elements of competing hypotheses are now regarded more accurately as complementary components of a specific etiology model. The main psychological theories are outlined only briefly. Both the disease model and the psychodynamic hypotheses were considered the most common explanations for drug abuse problems following world war ii. While psychodynamic awareness and treatment models are far less common at the moment than they were before, the disorder model is still considered to be the most commonly accepted model within substance abuse treatment programmes. The model"s underlying concept is that addiction is a disorder. The disorder is characterized by opioid dependency and patterns of maladaptive use, as well as the presence of risk for continuation of these behaviors during the individual"s lifetime.
