Document Summary

Although we spend 1/3 of our lives asleep, we aren"t certain of the biological function of sleep. Ancestors were more successful with gathering food and such during the day when they could see. They were also more at risk to predators if they were active at night. When food was scarce, needed to save energy which was done through sleep. We replenish a lot of proteins, hormones and such that were used essentially during the day. Cerebrospinal fluid gets rid of wasteful products in the brain. When we sleep, cerebrospinal fluid flow increases, so it is removing more waste products. If you wake them during this stage, they have a lot of trouble remembering things. The next night they will spend more time in stage 3 (make up for time woken up the night before) Heart rate and respiration very low; eyes move under eyelids. They will also catch up the next night for loss of rem sleep one night.
