BI SC 002 Lecture 14: BISC 002 Lecture 14
Document Summary
The first stage: make a recombinant plasmid. But: plants will not directly accept the plasmid if we just zap them with electricity. Instead we make use of a process that happens naturally, involving a bacterium that infects plant cells. Animals that have had a foreign gene purposely inserted into their genome. Routinely used as models: researching human genetic diseases. Created by: micro-injecting dna into embryo, using a virus to deliver a gene of interest. To permanently correct a genetic condition: huge advance in medicine. Uses genes to treat or prevent disease: single gene disorders. In the future could replace drugs or surgery. Several approaches: replace mutated gene with a healthy copy, inactivating a gene that does not function properly, introduce a new gene to fight disease. Currently only available as part of clinical trials. Need 2 things for this to work: the right dna material. Correctly functioning copy: a way to get it into our cells.
