Farmers ways to improve crop yields. Vegetables that originate from wild mustard plant: cauliflower, kale, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli. Farmers selected plants that had beneficial traits: reproduce. Darwin"s breeding experiments with pigeons showed: variation within a species does exist, has the right characteristics to allow: Natural selection to work in the real world. Bred different types of pigeons: used artificial selection. Random, favorable changes are selected for over time by nature in a consistent, non-random way: flexible. Describes when organisms diverge from a common ancestral species into a multitude of forms. Each of the variant species has adapted" to a particular environmental niche: coping. Example: finches from galapagos islands, different. Any change in heritable traits within a population across generations. Natural selection driving force of how evolution works. Example: population of bacteria causing infection. Treated with antibiotics: other cells killed by antibiotics. But one with mutation survives: drug resistant mutant divides and multiplies. Evolutionary changes happen to populations: generations.
