Dating (starting in early 20th century, peaking in 1950-70s) Why did dating become popular: extension of schooling (beyond 8th grade) Parents aren"t present, lots of people your age, hormones: growth of middle class. Teenagers had leisure time; don"t have to work to support family; have spending money: spread of automobile (really pushed courtship out the door) Could get far away from parents, and car provides privacy. Automobile commonly referred to as brothel on wheels .
