The united states is commonly known as an immigrant nation. This is due to the fact that everybody, with native americans as the exception, is either an immigrant or can trace their family history back to those who originally came from somewhere else. The legacy of immigration to the united states is extremely complex, transformative, and as well as pluralistic. The first large wave of immigrants to the united states took place at the turn of the twentieth century when the overwhelming majority of immigrants came from the european countries (although not all immigrants originated from here).
