Document Summary

Lecture 1 chapter 13: dna and its role in heredity: not the same. Chromosomes are a complex of dna and protein: dna has proteins that are bound to it. One chromosome can contain 100 genes, but 1 gene is on 1 chromosome: we did not know if dna or proteins carried genetic material. Griffith experiment: s-strain: smooth under microscope, r-strain: rough under microscope. Mice lived when injected with this strain: the s strain has a capsule and covered the microorganism. When this was injected into mice, they died. It was more virulent: they then took heat killed s-cells and mixed them with live r-cells. Discovered that something genetically changed the r-cells, turning them into s-cells. Avery macleod mccarty experiment: took the cells griffith was using, and treated them with rnase, and if rna was the genetic material we should lose the transformative activity. Treated them with dnase, and if dna was genetic material we should lose the transformative activity.
