Film chapter 3 notes: changing approaches to film: Establish location, distinguish characters, plot development all in just a few minutes, Goal: provide a clear visual presentation of the subject, rather than aspire to an ideal artisitic quality. In silent shorts, music/soundtrack is used to imply emotions and intensity. Films ordinary people in candid context, that footage can be edited to imply a message from fellow people as opposed to coming from a govt. Study of film"s provenance (original production context, and where it is currently exhibited) Study of film"s form, structure, and style. Study of film"s significance within textual study and contextual study. Study of contemporary responses (like youtube comments). Photos represent both the past, a screenshot of an old moment, preserving the past. but also show how much things have changed since then=duality. Capturing something mundane on film, and putting it in a new context ie, framed on a wall, gives us new perspective.
