Buddhism evolved out of the teachings of sakyamuni, who lived in north india in the late. He was born a prince, but abandoned his life of privilege in order to seek the true nature of being. After many years of meditation and privation he reached an understanding ( enlightenment ) He gave his first sermon in deer park; there he laid out the truths he had discovered. The way to overcome desire is to follow the eightfold path. An ancient indian concept of interdependent origination each moment arises out of a multitude of causes and conditions and in turn conditions the next moment; thus the soul is repeatedly reincarnated according to its karma (past experiences) The historical buddha sakyamuni (in japan, called shaka) Beings who have achieved enlightenment but have chosen not to enter nirvana until all other beings are enlightened.
