If lower portion of tube does not fuse, spina bifida results. If top portion of tube does not fuse, anencephaly results. Forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain visible by 28 days (look up figure of these) Evolution is recapitulated by development: walls of neural tube become thicker as neurons continue to divide. Forebrain bulge: forms telencephalon (cortex and limbic system) and diencephalon (thalamus and hypothalamus) By the first year, the brain weighs approx. Adult brain weighs about same as a laptop. Proliferation refers to the production of new cells/ neurons in the brain primarily occurring early in life. Early in development, the cells lining the ventricles divide. Some cells become stem cells and continue to divide. Others remain where they are and become neurons or glia that migrate to other locations.
