PSY 0010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Conjunction Fallacy, Prototype Theory, Cognitive Load
Document Summary
Language: a system for communicating with others using signals that are combined according t rules of grammar and to convey meaning. Grammar: a set of rules that specify how the units of language can be combined to produce meaning full messages. Phonemes: the elementary units of sound that distinguish meaning (there are approximately 44 phonemes in english) Every word in every language is composed of one or more morphemes. Deep structure- actual meaning: the dog chased the cat. Surface structure- the cat was chased by the dog = the dog chased the cat. Children learn language at an astonishing rate. Children make few errors while learning to speak. Children"s passive mastery develops faster than their active mastery. Infants can distinguish between all human phonemes, although this ability dissipates by 6 months of age. All infants go through the same babbling sequence. Babies could learn any language before they are 1 year old, and they learn really really fast.
